Chromatic Majlis
Concept design · Cadimore
Summary
An open-air majlis brings patterned shade, coloured arches and sculptural seating into a sociable plaza.
The Brief
Create a gathering place that supports both conversation and movement. Shade should establish a centre, while seating gives smaller groups comfortable edges within the larger public setting.
The Inspiration
The majlis is understood through hospitality and the arrangement of people. Its social logic matters more here than reproducing a traditional room.
The Concept
A perforated terracotta canopy casts a changing pattern across the ground. Blue and ochre arches organise entries and edges; curved seats face inward without enclosing the plaza.
The Experience
Visitors pass between the arches, choose a shaded seat or gather beneath the canopy. Dappled light gives the central floor a character that changes through the day.
The Outcome
The project gives a plaza the spatial clarity of a room and the openness of a street. Colour identifies the gathering place; the seating arrangement makes its social purpose legible.
