The Contemporary Souk
Concept design · Cadimore
Summary
A contemporary souk brings working craft displays and a clear central promenade into a warm evening market.
The Brief
Preserve the intimacy of an encounter with a maker while giving the market a legible public route. Display, circulation and opportunities to stop must work together.
The Inspiration
The souk is organised as much by exchange as by architecture. The project takes the conversation across a counter as its essential unit.
The Concept
Open-front stalls line a broad pedestrian spine. Timber frames and warm lanterns unify the setting; a sculptural centre gives visitors a point of orientation between craft displays.
The Experience
People move between pottery, textiles and other material encounters, pausing at a counter to inspect or discuss an object. The central route remains open for passing visitors and return journeys.
The Outcome
The market gives individual craft practices a coherent public setting. A clear spine and approachable stall fronts connect browsing with the more valuable encounter of understanding who made an object and how.
