Ember Theatre — Fire & Movement
Performance concept · Cadimore
Summary
A fire-fan dance gives the relationship between contained flame and expansive movement a clear dramatic progression.
The Brief
Treat fire as part of the choreography’s drawing language. The performer’s body must remain legible, with the fans extending a phrase rather than substituting for one.
The Inspiration
An ember holds energy before it expands. The piece uses that change of scale to move from a concentrated solo image into wider ensemble arcs.
The Concept
The movement vocabulary combines grounded pivots, extended arm lines and sweeping fan pathways. Warm costume tones connect the body with the flame, while a dark waterfront setting keeps the trajectories distinct.
The Experience
The piece moves from a restrained opening through expanding circles and interlocking ensemble patterns. A final reduction brings attention back to the performer, giving the spectacle a deliberate closing image.
Ember
A concentrated solo establishes the body and a restrained fan pathway, holding energy close to the centre.
Ignite
Turns and extended arms enlarge the flame trace, allowing the audience to read the change from contained gesture to open arc.
Interlock
The ensemble adds offset circles and contrasting orientations, building a layered drawing across the performance space.
Expand
A shared passage opens the widest fan pathways, marking the piece’s visual climax through coordinated movement.
Contain
The arcs reduce and the bodies return to a held image, closing the performance with control rather than another escalation.
The Outcome
Fire becomes a trace of choreographed movement. The contrast between controlled stillness and broad fan arcs makes the body, rather than the effect alone, the source of the performance’s presence.
