The Opening of Quiet
A lotus becomes a layered garden retreat, with pink and ivory petals offering different distances from its golden centre.
The Brief
A lotus expresses quiet through its layered opening. The brief creates several degrees of retreat within one recognisable flower, allowing a visitor to find calm at the edge as readily as near the centre.
Visitors can remain beside planting, sit on an outer petal or move toward the centre.
The Inspiration
The lotus suggests renewal and composure through its gradual opening. The concept draws on the relationship between outer petals and an inner centre, treating quiet as something that can be approached in different ways.
Pink and ivory petals surround a golden centre.
The Concept
Pink and ivory petals surround a golden centre. Outer layers become low seats beside planting, while inner surfaces frame views and soften the sense of the surrounding space. The flower’s recognisable form holds a sequence of increasingly inward settings.
An elevated view reveals the complete arrangement of the landmark, its seating and the routes around it.
The Experience
Visitors can remain beside planting, sit on an outer petal or move toward the centre. A restrained acoustic detail sits near a petal root, creating another quiet encounter without requiring the whole space to be experienced in the same way.
A set of timber sound elements is built into the lotus pavilion’s low seating, beneath the perforated petals.
The Outcome
Quiet takes an open and welcoming public form. The layered petals offer different distances from the centre, giving visitors a choice of seated rest, filtered views and a closer encounter within the unfolding flower.
The reverse view reveals the same structure’s layered edges, material surfaces and relationship to its setting.
